Technical Brief:

Introduction of virtual machine has enabled users to have multiple Operating Systems on singe machine (which can be client or server based). VHD is file-based storage on Virtual Hard Disk on Hyper-V platform. The VHD files faces few limitations amongst which is the limited size and another is possibility of the file hitting inconsistences due to power failure. An administrator can create VHD file of any file, where defining size of the virtual disk is mandatory.

Types of Virtual Hard Drives:

There are two types (primary) of VHD files: Fixed Size and Dynamically Expanding. The type of VHD file defines how much the disk space they can take to save the data. As the name itself suggests, the size of fixed VHDS is predefined on the file system of host computer. While the dynamic VHD file keep on expanding the size as needed.

Common Virtual Drive Errors:

A VHD file vulnerable to "N" types of inconsistences that can be caused due to improper mounting, copying, or corruption (hardware/software related issues). List of few errors that can be encountered, restricting access to the VHD file:

  • The file or directory is corrupted and unreadable.
  • A Virtual Disk Provider for the specified file was not found.
  • A device attached to the system is not functioning.
